ANU Diploma application questions: eligibility before paperwork

ANU Pathway Diplomas have a minimum selection rank of 70 and must be packaged with a Bachelor degree rather than taken with a standalone one-year study intention.

Start your ANU Diploma application checklist with your qualification, intended Bachelor degree and English result. ANU Pathway Diplomas have a minimum selection rank of 70, while applicants with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a Bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma. The Diploma must also be packaged with a Bachelor degree; it cannot be taken with a standalone one-year study intention.

Does your qualification fit the entry route?

The Australian National University’s Pathway Diplomas are designed for applicants with selection ranks of 70–79.99. Other entry backgrounds include a graded AQF Certificate IV, specified senior secondary qualifications from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, and the Work and Life Experience Scheme.

There are no subject prerequisites for Diploma entry, and adjustment factors do not apply.

The following examples correspond to the Diploma entry threshold of selection rank 70. They are a partial qualification table, so the exact qualification and scoring system matter.

Qualification Score corresponding to selection rank 70
Gao-Kao Shanghai 446 out of 660
Gao-Kao Hainan 608 out of 900
Gao-Kao, other provinces using a 750-point scale 506 out of 750
HKDSE 11
IB from Australian schools, November 2022 onwards 26.75
IB overseas, or Australian results before November 2022 27
GCE A-Levels, best three 10
GCE A-Levels, best four 12
SAT 1090
ACT 20

For the Tawjihi / Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama route, the stated requirement is an academic average of 80% plus SAT 1090 or above.

Predicted results are accepted for qualifications where ANU already accepts them for Bachelor admission. The Diploma also accepts predicted results for Tawjihi / Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama under the stated academic-average and SAT conditions.

Which Diploma leads to your intended Bachelor?

Choose the Bachelor destination before organising the application. The aligned degree determines the Diploma GPA needed for progression.

Pathway Diploma Aligned Bachelor degree Required Diploma GPA
Diploma of Business and Economics Bachelor of Accounting; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce; Bachelor of Economics; Bachelor of Finance 4.0
Diploma of Computing Bachelor of Computing 4.0
Diploma of Politics and International Relations Bachelor of Asian Studies 4.0
Diploma of Politics and International Relations Bachelor of International Relations; Bachelor of International Security Studies; Bachelor of Political Science; Bachelor of Public Policy 4.6

The Diplomas are standalone AQF Level 5 qualifications within a nested pathway structure. They take 12 months of full-time study across two semesters and eight courses. Progression into an aligned Bachelor carries one year of credit, equivalent to 48 units.

Changing to a non-aligned Bachelor follows a different assessment. Applicants are assessed as students with one year of undergraduate study at ANU, and credit is considered case by case. A full year of credit is not guaranteed when changing programs.

What English result is needed?

Direct entry requires IELTS overall 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent accepted result.

ANU ELICOS can be packaged with the pathway. The listed IELTS entry levels are:

ELICOS option IELTS overall Minimum band
10 weeks 6.0 5.5
20 weeks 5.5 5.0

The guide states that Semester 1 2027 ELICOS applications are closed. An applicant who needs English preparation therefore needs to distinguish the availability of that preparation from eligibility for direct Diploma entry.

Which application route applies?

Your application route depends on where and what you are studying.

  • Onshore applicants completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3: apply through UAC.
  • Other international applicants: apply through ANU Application Manager / Studylink.

The international application deadline listed for Semester 1 2027 is 15 December. Pathway Diplomas currently admit students in Semester 1 only.

For the packaged Diploma and Bachelor sequence, ANU issues one Confirmation of Enrolment for the Diploma and another for the Bachelor, supporting one visa application.

What study commitment and budget should you plan for?

Teaching is in person at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra. There is no remote option.

The 2027 indicative annual tuition fee is AUD 57,640 for each Pathway Diploma program. This is Diploma tuition only, not the total cost of the Diploma and Bachelor sequence. Financial capacity needs to cover the packaged study sequence.

Most students are not eligible for the ANU International Achievement Award or Vice-Chancellor’s Award during the Diploma. Assessment takes place on articulation with a Diploma GPA of at least 4.6, equivalent to selection rank 85. Pacific Region citizens are an exception: the International Achievement Award provides a 50% tuition discount from Diploma commencement.

Diploma students are full ANU students from the start. They take level-1000 courses shared with Bachelor students, alongside ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study. Support includes individual academic advice, progress monitoring and assistance with the transition into Bachelor study. Accommodation access is the same as for Bachelor students.

Your checklist before starting the application

Use this as a planning checklist. The available information does not provide a complete mandatory document list.

  • Record your exact qualification and scoring system.
  • Identify the entry route that matches your results.
  • Select your intended Bachelor degree.
  • Match it to the relevant Diploma.
  • Note the GPA required for progression.
  • Record your English result, including each band score.
  • Establish whether you qualify for direct English entry.
  • Identify your application channel.
  • Plan for in-person study in Canberra.
  • Budget for the Diploma and Bachelor sequence.
  • Record the application deadline for your intended intake.

The most useful starting point is a clear match between your qualification, your English result and your intended degree. Those details determine which application route and progression conditions belong on your checklist.
